Color and organic matter removal from dyehouse effluent remains a challenging issue for the environmentalist textile dyer. Until now, various treatment processes have been proposed with limited success. In this study, dye model industrial pollutant Reactive Black 5 (RB5; 20 mg/L) could be rapidly degraded by persulfate (PS)-enhanced photocatalytic using novel, home-made lanthanum iron oxide (LF; 0.5 g/L). LF-mediated heterogeneous photocatalysis was effective when solution pH kept below 4. The degradation of RB5 enhanced in presence 0.6 1.2 mM PS. dissolved carbon (DOC) content aqueous, hydrolyzed (initial DOC = 5.15 effectively reduced LF/UV-A (LF g/L; 52–54% after 150–180 min) LF/PS/UV-A 60–66% 120 treatments. LF photocatalyst reused four consecutive cycles complete color partial removals without significant deterioration performance LF/PS/UV-A/pH 3 process. Instrumental analyses LF’s surface morphology/chemical composition structural features via EDAX/SEM/Raman/FTIR/UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy indicated that remained practically intact throughout treatment, though slight changes/decreases particle size/partial deformation agglomeration coverage were observed, particularly during treatment. its products on revealed adsorption played major role photocatalysis. Fe-content did not deviate appreciably original value
